The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India — the largest bishops' conference in Asia — opened its 29th Plenary Assembly at the Asha Niketan Pastoral Centre in Bhopal on 31 January 2017. Around 130 of the country's 182 Latin-rite bishops gathered for eight days of deliberation on family life in Asia, with special focus on India.
The brief
The assembly's theme put the family at the centre of public discussion: revitalising the family in a fast-developing economy, and reinforcing the call of Pope Francis, who described families as sacred. The communication task was delicate in two directions. Family values had to become the point of news discussion without the event being reduced to a religious function. And the subject is socially sensitive, so exceptional care was needed in regions where sensitivities around such coverage differ sharply.
Why the theme carried beyond the Church
In Asia, family-life issues had not yet started being discussed publicly, while elsewhere in the world they had already become a common problem — ties weakening as people judged snapping them easier and more beneficial than carrying them through time and career. Watching that pattern elsewhere, the bishops brought eight days of deliberation on the issues as they stand in Asia, with special focus on India — which gave the story a relevance to every reader, churchgoer or not: securing family life alongside a fast-developing economy's career pressures.
Media work
The team deliberately chose an unhurried approach. We read the statement issued by Pope Francis and opened the press release with his phrase — family as sacred — an approach that won sympathy and interest immediately. The release then covered the importance of family values, where India stood, and why the country was the special focus of this assembly. It was written as a soft social story rather than event coverage, so it read as news about a society, not a report about a meeting.
Coverage and outcomes
The story moved through a wire agency, and leading newspapers picked it up from there — the widest possible national reach a release can get.
Bhopal, where the assembly was held, covered the event well across the event's eight days.
The family-values objective was accepted and discussed across media platforms, keeping the assembly's theme alive after the bishops left Bhopal.
